From symptom to root cause

What companies ask me, and what lies behind it.

We often start from a specific request, such as redoing the website. That request is usually the symptom of something bigger. I work by reverse engineering: from the concrete problem I go back to its root cause, and from there I rebuild a path of strategy and efficiency.

How to read this page

  1. Your request. The sentence a company comes to me with.
  2. What usually lies underneath. What I find most often, in the words of my pages.
  3. Where we start. The area of work I would start from: the root cause.

Choose the request closest to yours.

Your request

“We need to put things in order: our workflows, how managers and departments talk to each other, our relationships with suppliers.”

What usually lies underneath

“When goals, people and processes go in different directions, the company wastes energy. I work to bring them back in line: who decides what, how information moves, which steps slow the work down.”

“I listen to the words used in meetings, in emails and in the hallways, not the ones in press releases. They show whether there is a shared direction or whether everyone speaks a different language, and whether the strategy has entered daily work or has stayed a document.”

“Then I talk to the company’s long-standing suppliers: communications agencies, in-house and external marketing directors, photographers, art directors. I work alongside them, so that both their work and mine pay off more.”

Where we start

Organization and culture

Goals, people and processes brought back in line with the same direction, with attention to company culture and to the language people use inside the company.

“Changing those words is often the first step toward changing what the company does.”

The first meeting is free of charge, in person or online.

Your request

“We need to organize our communication, marketing and creative work.”

What usually lies underneath

“Many companies start communicating before they know who they are: campaigns, website, social media, messages. Without a clear identity behind them, those messages build nothing.”

“In these cases the work starts from a short text, written with the owners, that says what we are, what we are not and who we work for.”

“I know their language and their difficulties because for years I did their job, and I can untangle problems both on the company’s side and on the supplier’s side.”

Where we start

Identity and positioning

What you are and what you are not, before you communicate: a written identity, positioning and language guidelines.

Let’s talk

“The most useful part of a written identity is the part that says what the company is not, because that is what makes it possible to say no.”

The first meeting is free of charge, in person or online.

Your request

“We want to bring in artificial intelligence, but with a strategy.”

What usually lies underneath

“Before that, though, there is a decision that belongs to the people who run the company: in which activities AI helps and in which it does not, who is accountable for it, how to tell whether it is working. Skipping this decision leads to buying tools that nobody ends up using.”

“Because a tool answers a choice that someone has to have made.”

“First we decide where to go, then we choose the tools.”

Where we start

Direction and priorities

With owners and boards: what to do and what not to do, which initiatives to stop, revise or strengthen, written criteria for choosing.

Digital and processes

Digital transformation, processes, digital marketing, training and new digital products, in service of the decisions on direction.

First the decision on direction, then the tools and the processes.

“Companies need more than someone to bring in artificial intelligence; they need someone to decide where and how to adopt it.”

Your request

“We need a new website.”

What usually lies underneath

“Whoever calls me to rebuild the website sees in one element the cause of something bigger.”

“In the conversation it usually turns out that behind that request there are one or more processes to fix. The website comes at the end, and it holds up because clear decisions stand behind it.”

“The company has been communicating for years with different voices, because everyone has told its story their own way, and the website, the catalogs and the social media profiles resemble the people who made them more than the company.”

Your request

“We want to sell in the United States.”

What usually lies underneath

“The larger part of the work is bringing Italian projects to the United States: market entry, distribution, offices or a logistics center, agreements with suppliers.”

“A company goes before an American partner or investor after a process that brings it up to the standards they expect, and that process is strategic work.”

“It is a kind of translation: adapting an Italian company’s project to the rules of the U.S. market, and carrying all of it across.”

Where we start

International expansion

Bringing Italian companies up to international standards and taking them into the United States until they are set up there; the strategic due diligence of Italian projects for investors based in the United States. The legal, tax and financial parts are handled by American professionals.

First the company gets ready, then the U.S. market.
