The infinite mirror
People have always faced a mirror that reflects them and that they can talk to. Digital has created an infinite mirror, which duplicates our image instead of reflecting it, and with a mirror like that no conversation is possible. Metrics then become the coordinates we use to find our way, and later the measure of our worth.
Slowness and lightness
Slowness means giving things more time and looking for the other person’s reasoning, not their instinct: waiting for an answer, not a like. Lightness, in the sense of Italo Calvino’s Six Memos for the Next Millennium, means precision and responsibility in the message, and the courage to cut what is superfluous. The talk, “Reflections on identity in the age of the metaverse,” is in the article with the transcript.
