What does a business strategist do?

In short. A business strategist helps an organization, together with its owners and board, decide what to do and what to stop doing. The work is to set priorities, separate what creates value from what only uses up resources, and stay with the company while those choices take hold in the daily work.

The work, in practice

I go into the company and talk to everyone, from the owners to the people on the shop floor, to understand how it really works. Then, with the people who run it, we decide where to go and what to stop, and we build a strategy with an operating plan for each area. The plan does not stand still: we update it month by month, with weekly meetings.

A name that says little

Many business owners do not know this work has a name. They come to me because a colleague explained what I do. A business strategist is often confused with a consultant, a coach or a manager, and the difference matters. I wrote about it at length in The business strategist.
