Can I hand you the strategy and get a finished plan?

In short. No. A strategy is not a document to hand over: it is a course that is built with the company and updated along the way. Results are measured in six-month periods, over six to eighteen months, and they need access to information, regular meetings and the involvement of the owners.

A course, not a document

Effective strategies do not come only from the initial plan. They take shape along the way, in the constant exchange between those who decide and those who carry out the work. Henry Mintzberg and James A. Waters showed this in a 1985 study of deliberate and emergent strategies, published in the Strategic Management Journal. That is why the plan we build changes month by month, while the direction holds.

The owners stay involved

Delegating is fine: it means handing over a task and staying present. Disappearing does not work. I ask the owners and the board for time, regular meetings and a willingness to question their own ideas. It is a commitment, and whoever takes it gives up the quick fix in exchange for a result that lasts.
